Safety Guidelines for Shooting the Pro-Active Target Handgun Trainer
Shooting steel targets is great training, and perfectly safe provided some simple, common sense rules are followed.
You must always wear adequate eye and ear protection. Quality eye and ear protection should be utilized in any shooting sport, but it is especially important when shooting reactive steel targets in the off chance that bullet spall from target strikes travels towards the shooter. The Pro-Active Handgun Trainer is designed specifically to remove all chance of this, but as with marksmanship itself, good habits go a long way. Sound amplification hearing protection like Sordins or other quality brands greatly enhance the experience of shooting steel because they filter out the harmful, high decible gunshots, while allowing the shooter to experience the satisfying Ping of each strike on steel.
A brimmed hat is a must. It protects the shooter from bullet spall, sun, and the chance of hot bullet casings landing between the users eye protection and their face. Ask us how we know.
The minimum recommended distance for shooting the Pro-Active Handgun Trainer is 7 yards, and specatators should always remain behind the shooter while he or she is engaging the targets. Spectators must also wear proper quality eye and ear protection while on the line with shooters.
The ProActive Handgun Trainer is designed specifically for ammunition with a maximum velocity of 1,500 fps. Provided this rule is followed, steel jacketed pistol ammunition, hollow point ammunition, and lead ammunition are all perfectly fine for training purposes. Steel-cored, hardened, and armor piercing ammunition should never be used, nor should rifle or shotgun ammuntion. Doing so is both dangerous, and voids the warranty of the Pro-Active Handgun Trainer.
If the target is showing any divoting or deformity, the shooter should cease using that particular target as the divots and deformities could deflect bullet spall in manners not intended in the original design.
Long sleaved shirts and pants are recommended as they too prevent the shooter from burns from hot brass, etc.
