The Pro-Active Defensive Handgun Trainer is centered on the universally adaptable target stand base comprised of two foldable front legs, rear stabilizer, and collar. The base is designed to move the center of gravity of the target parallel to the ground, keeping it from being damaged by inadvertant bullet strikes, misses, and damaging bullet spall.
The two front legs, and rear stabilizer have angled feet that allow the user to punch the target stand into the ground at the range with a simple tap or two of his foot. The two front legs also have pre-drilled holes in them allowing for the use of spikes for greater stability on uneven terrain.
Two bolts, washers, and lock nuts allow the user to select the tension they desire when deploying the target stand. A minute spent on the installation fixes the nuts in place, and the target will collapse into an easily transported position for users who take their targets home at the end of a training session. For fixed installations, such as permanent range targets, tightening the bolts all the way down will fix the front legs in place.
The rear stabilizer is welded at a downward angle so that the entire base leans slightly to the rear for better weight distribution when the target mast and head are deployed. The base is constructed of a powder coated, cold rolled steel, and weighs a mere 12 lbs.
The mast recepticle at the heart of the target stand base is a single injection molded steel piece. The injection molding creates a much stronger recepticle that is not subject to cracking or deforming after repeated strikes as are welded recepticles.
There is a pre case hole in the bottom of the recepticle allowing for water to drain from the target when shooters use it in the rain. Shooting in wet conditions is highly recommended, as the bullet spall that hits the ground to rear of the target creates some dramatic "walls of water" that spray up around the target with each strike.
The rear stabilizer is welded to the base collar after the injection molding is completed, and the final piece is powder coated for a uniform, low gloss finish.
As with the base recepticle, the mast recepticle where the target head mounts is also injection molded to prevent cracking or deforming after repeated bullet strikes to the target transfer energy through the mast and into the target base.
The mast itself is constructed of hardened steel, and because of the slim profile is nearly impossible to strike inadvertantly. It will withstand repeated strikes of all recommended handgun calibers, and withstood a strike from a .700 grain nuclear load fired from a S&W 500 during testing with only a slight dimple to the surface.
When fully dissasmbled, the Handgun trainer takes up barely any room at all. Three simple pieces for carrying. The mast and universal base can be carried in one hand, the target head in the other.
The picture on the right is of one of the first prototype target heads. This head, - unit 3 in a test batch of 10 units-, has withstood over 10,000 strikes from 9mm, .45 cal, .38 special, and .357 magnum. No divoting, no damage. Only the finely policed steel surface that's been smoothed by the sweet kiss of hot lead.
